SAM IS VISITED BY AN
ANGEL - Sam and Dean investigate the murders of several
people by individuals who claim they were visited by
an angel and were carrying out God's will. After the
brothers learn those murdered were actually guilty of
secret crimes, Sam begins to believe this angel really
does exist, but Dean stands firm on the fact a demon
is behind the slayings - until he sees something even
he can't explain.
Full Synopsis
Gloria's
house
Gloria
is sitting watching TV in her house, and smoking. There
are statues of angels on the desk next to her. She comes
across a program with a man talking about God, and she
turns off the TV. The lights start to flicker, and then
suddenly the TV turns back on, and the man keeps talking
about angels and God. She tries to turn it off, but
it won't turn off. Everything suddenly starts shaking.
She stands up and she sees a bright light behind her.
She turns around and she can almost see a shape in the
middle…
Hospital
Gloria is sitting on her bed, reading a book, when someone
comes in behind her. "You're not the usual guy,"
she says, and we see that Sam has come in. "No,
I'm just filling in," he replies, coming over to
her. He asks her how she's feeling, and she replies
that she's never felt better. "So, no disturbances
lately?" he asks. "You mean am I stark raving
mad for coco puffs?" she says, and Sam replies
"I didn’t say that." "It's alright,"
Gloria says. "I know what people must think."
"What do you think?" Sam asks. "I think
what I saw was real," she answers. Sam sits down.
"I'd like to know what you saw." She looks
at him for a moment, and then says "It was all
over the news. I stabbed a man in the heart." "Why
would you do that?" Sam asks. "Because it
was God's will," she says. "Did God talk to
you?" Sam asks. "I get the sense God's a little
busy for house calls," she says. "No, He sent
someone." "Someone?" "An angel.
It came to me in this beautiful white light. And it
filled me with this… feeling. It's hard to describe.
"And this angel…" begins Sam. "Spoke
God's word," she says. "And the word was –
to kill someone?" Sam asks. "I know it sounds
strange," says Gloria. "But what I did was
very important. I helped Him smite an evil man. I was
chosen. For redemption." "This man you stabbed,
did the angel give you his name?" Sam asks her.
"No, he just told me to wait for the sign. And
the very next day I saw it. Right beside the man's doorway.
And I knew." "Why him?" Sam asks. "I
just know what the angel told me," she answers.
"That this man was guilty to his deepest foundations.
And that was good enough for me."
The
boys' motel room
Dean is laying on his vibrating bed at the motel room,
listening to music. The motel door opens, and Sam comes
in. He says "Hey," but Dean doesn't hear him,
so he goes over and grabs Dean's foot and he jumps.
"Hey," says Dean, "Man, you have got
to try this because there really is magic in the magic
fingers." "You're enjoying that way too much,
it's kinda making me uncomfortable," says Sam.
"What am I supposed to do, I mean you've got me
on lock down here, I'm bored out of my skull,"
replies Dean. "Hey!" says Sam. "You were
the bank robber on the eleven o' clock news, not me.
We can't risk you just walking into a government facility."
Suddenly the bed stops vibrating, and Dean sits up.
"Aw, dammit! That was my last quarter. Hey,"
he says, getting off the bed. "You got any quarters?"
"No," says Sam, washing his hands in the bathroom.
"So
did you get in to see that crazy hooker?" Dean
asks, coming to the doorway, and Sam replies yes. "And
I'm not so sure she's crazy." "So she seriously
believes she was – touched by an angel,"
Dean says. "Yeah. Blinding light, feelings of spiritual
ecstasy, the works," Sam replies. "I mean,
she's living in a locked ward, and she's totally at
peace." "Oh yeah, you're right, sounds completely
sane," Dean says. "What about the dude she
stabbed?" "Uh, Carl Gully. Said she killed
him because he was evil." "Was he?" "I
don't know. I mean I couldn't find any dirt on him.
He didn't have a criminal record, he worked at the campus
library, had lots of friends… he was a churchgoer…"
"Hmm.
So Gloria's just your standard issue wacko," Dean
says, following Sam as he leaves the bathroom. "I
mean she wouldn't be the first nut job in history to
kill in the name of religion, know what I mean?"
"No, but she's the second in town to murder because
an angel told them to. A little odd, don't you think?"
"Odd, yes. Supernatural, maybe. But angels, I don't
think so," Dean says. "Why not?" Sam
asks. "'Cause there's no such thing, Sam,"
Dean replies. "Dean, there's ten times as much
lore about angels as there is about anything else we've
hunted." "Hey you know what, there's a ton
of lore about unicorns, too. In fact I hear they ride
on silver moonbeams and they shoot rainbows out of there
ass," Dean says. "There's no such thing as
unicorns?" Sam says jokingly. "Cute. I'm just
saying man, there's some legends, I just file them under
bullcrap," Dean replies, sitting down. "And
you got angels on the bullcrap list," Sam says,
surprised. "Yep," Dean says. "Why?"
"Because I've never seen one," Dean answers.
"So what?" Sam says. "So I believe in
what I can see," Dean says. "Dean! You and
I have seen things most people couldn't even dream about!"
"Exactly. We've seen them with our own two eyes.
Hard proof. Okay? But in all this time, I've never seen
anything that looks like an angel. Don't you think that
if they existed, we'd have crossed paths with them,
or at least know someone who's crossed paths with them?
No. This is a demon, or a spirit, you know, they find
people a few fries short of a happy meal, and they trick
them into killing these randoms." "Maybe,"
Sam says. "Can we just – I'm going stir crazy,
man. Hey let's go by Gloria's apartment, huh?"
"I was just there. And nothing. No sulfur, no EMF…"
"You didn't see any fluffy white wing feathers?"
Dean says sarcastically. "But, Gloria did say that
the angel gave her a sign, right beside Carl Gully's
doorway." "Could be something at his house.
Worth checking out," says Dean.
Outside
Carl's house
The boys park outside Carl's house, and walk up to the
doorsteps. "Hey, Sam, I think I found it,"
says Dean, pointing at an angel decoration outside his
door. "It's a sign from up above." Dean looks
into the windows and then comes back down. "Well
I think I learned a valuable lesson. Always take down
your Christmas decorations after New Year's, or you
might get fileted by a hooker from God." "I'm
laughing on the inside," says Sam, and then walks
around beside the house, goes through the gate, and
comes to a trapdoor leading down to a cellar. "You
know, Gloria said the guy was guilty to his deepest
foundations," Sam says. "You think she literally
meant the foundation?" Dean asks.
The boys go down inside the cellar
with flashlights. They see jars and shelves, but that's
it. Suddenly Sam spots something on the wall. "Hey,"
he says, and Dean comes over. "It's a fingernail,"
says Sam, picking it off the wall. The boys grab shovels
and start digging. A while later, they've uncovered
a skeleton. "So much for the innocent church-going
librarian," says Sam. "Yeah well whatever
spoke to Gloria about this knew what he was talking
about," says Dean. "I'll give you that."
At
a house
A man is laying on his bed in his house, drinking, when
suddenly everything start shaking. He stands up and
looks around, and then suddenly he sees a bright light.
Outside
The same man is walking along the sidewalk when suddenly
he sees a bright light in front of a house. He nods,
and goes to the door and knocks. A man answers the door.
"Yes?" "Hi, my name is Zack," says
the first man. "Can I help you?" Zack doesn't
answer, he just takes out a knife and stabs the man
in the stomach, killing him.
The
boys' motel room
Dean is sitting on his bed listening to the police radio
when Sam comes in. "Did you bring quarters?"
Dean asks quickly. "Dude, I'm not enabling your
sick habit," Sam says, tossing Dean some food.
"You're like one of those lab rats that pushes
the pleasure button instead of the food button until
it dies." "What're you talking about, I eat,"
says Dean. "And I got news." "Me too,"
says Sam. "Three students have disappeared off
college campus this year. All of them were last seen
at the library." "Where Carl Gully worked,"
says Dean. "So Gloria's angel –" begins
Sam. "Angel?" Dean cuts in. "Okay, whatever
this thing is –" "Ok whatever it is
it struck again," interrupts Dean. "I was
listening to the police radio before you got here, and
this guy, Zack Smith, local drunk – he went up
to a stranger's door last night, stabbed him in the
heart." "And then I'm guessing he went to
the police and confessed?" "Yep. And I got
the victims address," says Dean.
The
victim's house
Sam and Dean go to the victim's house and break in through
the window. Sam sits at the man's computer and cracks
his password, finding a ton of emails to a lady named
Jennifer. "This lady who's thirteen years old,"
he continues. "Oh I don't want to hear this,"
says Dean. "Looks like they met in a chat room,"
Sam goes on. "These emails are pretty personal,
Dean." A minute later he finds that they'd set
up a place to meet. "They were supposed to meet
today," he finishes. "Huh. I guess if you're
gonna stab someone, good timing," says Dean. "I
don’t know man, this is weird, you know. I mean
sure some spirits are out for vengeance but this one's
almost like a do-gooder. You know like a…"
"An avenging angel?" Sam finishes. "How
else do you explain it, Dean? Three guys, not connected
to each other, all stabbed through the heart! At least
two of them were world-class pervs, and I bet if you
dug deep enough on the other guy –" "Hey,"
interrupts Dean. "You said Carl Gully was a church
goer, right?" "Yeah," says Sam. "What
was the name of his church?" asks Dean. "Our
Lady of Angels?" says Sam. "Of course that'd
be the name," says Dean. "Looks like Frank
went to the same church." He holds up a piece of
paper with the church's name across the top.
Our
Lady of Angels Church
"So you're interested in joining the parish,"
says the priest they're walking with, Father Reynolds.
"Yeah well we just don't feel right unless we hit
church every Sunday," says Dean. "Where did
you say you lived before?" asks the priest. The
boys tell him a town in Texas. "Really? That's
a nice town," says the priest, and says they must
know the priest there. "Sure, uh that's Father
O' Mally," says Dean quickly. "I know a Father
Shaughnessy," says the priest. "Shaughnessy.
Exactly. What did I say?" says Dean. "You
know we're just happy to be here now, Father,"
cuts in Sam. "And we're happy to have you,"
says the Father. "We could use some young blood
around here." Dean asks about the neighbourhood,
and the Father says that it's gone to seed a little,
there's no denying that. "That's why what the church
does here is so important. Like I always say you can
except a miracle but in the meantime, you work your
butt off," he finishes. "Yeah we heard about
the murders," says Dean. "Yes. The victims
were parishioners of mine, I'd known them for years."
"And the killers said that an angel made them do
that?" Sam says. "Yes, misguided souls,"
says the Father. Dean asks if he believes in the angels,
and the Father replies absolutely. "Father, that's
Michael, right?" Sam asks, pointing at a painting
on the wall of an angel stabbing a creature on the ground.
"That's right. The arch angel Michael," says
the Father. "With the flaming sword, and the fighter
of demons, a holy force against evil." "So
they're not really the Hallmark card version that everybody
thinks?" Sam asks. "They're fierce, right?
Vigilant." "Well I like to think of them as
more loving than wrathful," says the Father, "But
yes, a lot of scripture paints angels as God's warriors.
An angel of the Lord appeared to them, the glory of
the Lord shone down upon them… and they were terrified."
When the boys look slightly confused, the priest finishes
"Luke, 2:9." The boys nod quickly.
Outside
the church
"Well thank you for speaking with us, Father,"
says Sam as they walk outside onto the steps. "Oh
it was my pleasure," replies the Father. "Hope
to see you again." "Hey Father, what's all
that for?" asks Dean, pointing at some candles
and a cross set up at the bottom of the steps. "Oh
that’s for Father Gregory," replies the Father.
"He was a priest here." "Was?" "He
passed away right here on these steps," continues
the Father. He tells them he's in the church crypt.
"When did this happen?" asks Dean. "Two
months ago. He was shot for his car keys." "I'm
sorry," Sam says. "Me too," says the
Father. "He was a good friend. I didn't even have
time to administer his last rights. But like I said,
it's a tough neighbourhood. Ever since he died I've
been praying my heart out." "For what?"
asks Sam. "For deliverance. For the violence and
the bloodshed around here. We could use a little divine
intervention, I suppose." They say good bye to
the Padre, and go down the steps to the shrine for Father
Gregory. Dean picks up the picture of the Father and
says, "It's all starting to make sense. A devoted
priest dies a violent death – that's vengeful
spirit material right there. And he knew all the other
stiffs 'cause they went to church here. In fact I'm
willing to bet that because he as their priest, he knew
things about them nobody else knew." "Then
again," says Sam, "Father Reynolds started
praying for God's help about two months ago, right?
About the time all this started happening?" "Oh
come on, man, what's your deal?" says Dean. "What
do you mean?" asks Sam. "Look I'll admit I'm
a bit of a skeptic, but since when are you all Mr. 700
Club? No seriously, from the get-go you've been willing
to buy this angel crap, I mean what's next, you're gonna
start praying everyday?" He puts back the picture.
"I do," says Sam. "What?" says Dean.
"I do pray everyday," Sam continues. "I
have for a long time." Dean looks shocked. "The
things you learn about a guy," he says. "Huh.
Well come on, let's go check out Father Gregory's grave."
Church
crypt
Sam walks into the crypt as Dean walks outside, and
Sam sees the statue of an angel suddenly start shaking.
He walks up to it and then suddenly a bright light appears
behind him.
Dean walks in to find Sam laying on
the floor, but he says he's fine and they leave.
Church
They go back into the church and Dean says, "You
saw it, didn’t you? Didn't you?" "Yeah,"
says Sam. "Yeah, Dean I saw an angel." Dean
takes out a bottle from the inside of his jacket and
offers it to Sam. "I don't want a drink,"
he says, and Dean takes one himself. "So. What
makes you think you saw a – uh – angel?"
he asks. "It just appeared before me, and…
this feeling washed over me. Like peace. Like grace,"
Sam says. "Okay, ecastasy boy, maybe we'll get
you some glow sticks and a nice Dr. Seuss hat, huh?"
Dean says. "Dean, I'm serious," says Sam.
"It spoke to me, it knew who I was." "It
was just a spirit, Sam," says Dean. "Okay,
it's not the first one that's been able to read people's
minds. Okay, let me guess. You were personally chosen
to smite some sinner. You just gotta wait for some divine
bad signal, is that it?" "Yeah, actually,"
says Sam. "Great," Dean replies. "I don't
suppose you asked what this alleged bad guy did."
"Actually I did, Dean. And the angel told me. And
he hasn’t done anything. Yet." "Oh this
is – I don't believe this," says Dean. "Dean,
the angel hasn't been wrong yet!" says Sam loudly.
"Someone's going to do something awful, and I can
stop it!" "You know you're supposed to be
bad, too, Sam, maybe I should just stop you right now,"
says Dean. "You know what Dean, I don't understand!"
says Sam. "Why can't you even consider the possibility?"
"What, that this is an angel?" Dean says.
"Yes!" yells Sam. "Maybe we're hunting
an angel here, and we should stop! Maybe this is God's
will." "Okay, you know what, I get it. You've
got faith. That's – hey, good for you. I'm sure
it makes things easier. I'll tell you who else had faith
like that, Mom," Dean says. Sam turns to look at
Dean. "She used to tell me when she tucked me in
that angels were watching over us. In fact that was
the last thing she ever said to me." "You
never told me that," Sam says. "What's to
tell?" Dean asks. "She was wrong. There was
nothing protecting her. There's no higher power. There's
no God. I mean, there's just chaos and violence. And
random unpredictable evil that comes out of nowhere…
and rips you to shreds. You want me to believe in this
stuff, I'm gonna need to see some hard proof, you got
any?" Sam says nothing. "Well I do. Proof
that we're dealing with a spirit," Dean finishes.
Crypt
"That looks like…" begins Sam as they
study a plant that is growing all over Father Gregory's
part of the crypt. "It's Worm Wood," finishes
Dean. "It's associated with the dead. Specifically
the ones that are not at rest. I don't see it growing
anywhere else, except over the murdered priest's marker.
It's him, Sam." "Maybe," Sam says. "Maybe?"
says Dean. "Dean, I don't know what to think,"
Sam says. "Okay," says Dean. "You want
somemore proof? I'll give you more proof." "How?"
asks Sam incredulously. "We'll summon Gregory's
spirit," says Dean. "What?" gapes Sam.
"Here? In the church?" "Yeah. Yeah we
just need a few odds and ends, and that séance
ritual in Dad's journal." Sam isn’t too happy
but Dean says if Gregory's spirit is around, a séance
will bring him right to them. "If it's him, then
we'll put him to rest," Dean says. "What if
it's an angel, it won't show. Nothing will happen,"
says Sam. "Exactly," agrees Dean. "It's
one of the perks of the job, Sam. We don't have to operate
on faith. We can know for sure. Don't you want to know
for sure?" Sam nods.
On
the street, outside a small store
"Dude, alright, I'll admit we've gone pretty ghetto
with spellwork before, but this takes the cake,"
Sam says, carrying a big bag of stuff. "I mean,
a Spongebob place mat instead of an altar cloth?"
"We'll just put its Spongebob side down,"
says Dean. Sam pauses and suddenly sees a bright light
behind a man standing on the sidewalk. "Dean, that's
it!" "What?" asks Dean. "That's
a sign," says Sam, pointing. Dean looks, but he
can't see anything. "Where?" "Right there,
right behind that guy. That's him, Dean. We have to
stop him!"
As the man starts across the road, Dean grabs Sam before
he can get to the guy. "Wait a minute!" he
says. "What? Dean, let me go," says Sam. "You're
not going to go kill somebody because a ghost told you
to, are you insane?" says Dean. "Dean, I'm
not insane. I'm not going to kill him, I'm going to
stop him." "Define stop, huh? I mean what
are you going to do?" asks Dean. Sam watches the
guy get in his car. "Dean, please. He's gonna hurt
someone, you know it." "Alright, come on,"
says Dean, getting in the car. But Sam's door is locked.
"Dean, unlock my door," orders Sam, but Dean
just starts the car and leans over toward him, saying
"You're not killing anyone, Sam. I got this guy.
You go do the séance." "Dean!"
says Sam angrily, but Dean drives away.
Dean follows the man's car along the
road. The man stops and picks up a girl from her house,
then pulls away again. Dean follows.
Crypt
In the crypt, Sam lights the last candle, and then reads
the Latin from John's journal, finishing the ritual.
"What are you doing?" Father Reynolds is standing
in the doorway. "What is this?" Sam freezes.
"Uh. Father, please, I can explain. Uh. Actually,
maybe I can't. This is uh – a séance."
"A séance?" says Reynolds angrily.
"Young man, you are in the house of God."
"It's based on early Christian rights, if that
helps any," says Sam weakly. "Enough. You're
coming with me," says Reynolds, grabbing Sam's
arm and pulling him away. "Father, please, just
wait a second," says Sam desperately when suddenly
a bright light appears behind them. Father Reynolds
turns around. "Oh my God. Is that an angel?"
"No it's not," says Sam. "It's just Father
Gregory." And the bright light fades. The murdered
priest is standing there. "Thomas?" says Reynolds
in amazement. "I've come in answer to your prayers,"
says Gregory.
Road
Meanwhile Dean is still following the man.
Crypt
"Sam. I thought I sent you on your path. You should
hurry," says Gregory as the two men walk closer
to him. "Father, I'm sorry," says Sam. "But
you're not an angel." "Of course I am,"
replies Gregory. "No," says Sam. "You're
a man. You're a spirit. And you need to rest."
"I was a man," says Gregory. "And now
I'm an angel. I was on the steps of the church. I felt
that bullet pierce right through me. But there was no
pain. And suddenly I could see - everything. Father
Reynolds I saw you, praying and crying here. I came
to help you." "Help me how?" asks Reynolds.
Road
Dean continues following the man, but somehow he's lost
him. "Dammit," he says.
Crypt
"Those murders," says Reynolds. "They
were because of you?" "I received the word
of God," says Gregory. "He told me to smite
the wicked. I'm carrying out his will." "You're
driving innocent people to kill," says Reynolds.
"Those innocent people are being offered redemption,"
replies Gregory. "Some people need redemption.
Don't they, Sam?" "How can you call this redemption?"
says Reynolds incredulously. "You can't understand
it now," says Gregory. "But the rules of man
and the rules of God are two very different things."
"Those people," interrupts Sam. "They're
locked up." "No, they're happy. They found
peace, beaten their demons," says Gregory. "And
I've given them the keys to Heaven." "No,
no, this is vengeance. It's wrong," cuts in Reynolds.
"Thomas, this goes against everything you believed.
You're lost. Misguided." "Father. No, I'm
not misguided," begins Gregory. "You are not
an angel, Thomas," interrupts Reynolds. "Men
cannot be angels." "But –" says
Gregory. "I don't understand. You prayed for me
to come." "I prayed for God's help. Not this,"
says Reynolds. "What're you doing is not God's
will. Thou shalt not kill. That's the word of God."
Road
Meanwhile the man stops his car. His girlfriend looks
at him. "How come we stopped?" He says nothing
but suddenly leans forward and begins to kiss her. She
laughs nervously and pushes him off. "Um –
we were going to go to the movies?" she says. "We
should go, or we're going to be late." He suddenly
hits her in the face. "I'm sorry," he says.
"It's just, I've never done this before."
She reaches for the door but he locks it. "Look,
I said I was sorry," he says. "Please!"
she says, but then he pulls out a knife and goes to
attack her. Suddenly the window breaks behind him and
Dean hits the man's head on the steering wheel. He goes
around to the side and asks the girl if she's alright.
"Thank God," she says. Suddenly the man drives
away. "Dammit," says Dean. "You're sure
you're okay? Do you have a cell phone? Call 911."
He jumps in the Impala and drives after the guy.
Crypt
Gregory is looking at his name on the gravestone. "Let
us help you," says Sam. "No," says Gregory.
"It's time to rest, Thomas. To be at peace,"
says Reynolds. "Please, let me give your last rights."
He begins to say them and Gregory begins to flicker.
"Father Reynolds?" says Gregory, and he kneels
in front of Reynolds. The priest finishes the rights
and Gregory disappears in a bright light.
Road
Dean is still racing after the man. They are going very
fast, skidding around corners. Suddenly a truck skids
out in front of them and the man is forced to slam on
his brakes. As the truck also brakes, a metal pole flies
off the back of it and flies right through the man's
windshield. Dean slows down and gets out of his car,
shocked. "Holy…" he begins, completely
shocked by what he sees. The pole speared right through
the man's body and out the back of the seat, killing
him.
The
boys' motel
Sam is packing their stuff as Dean lets himself in the
door. "How was your day?" he asks. "You
were right," says Sam. "It wasn't an angel,
it was Gregory." Dean takes a drink from the little
bottle in his jacket and holds it out to Sam, and this
time he takes it. "I don’t know, Dean, I
just um…" begins Sam. "I wanted to believe
– so badly – it's so damn hard to do this.
What we do. All alone, you know, and… there's
so much evil out in the world Dean I feel like I could
drown it. And when I think about my destiny, when I
think about how I could end up…" "Yeah
well don't worry about that, alright? I'm watching out
for you," says Dean, sitting down. "Yeah I
know you are," says Sam. "But you're just
one person, Dean. And I needed to think that there was
something else, watching too, you know? Some…
higher power. Some greater good… and that maybe…"
"Maybe what?" asks Dean. "Maybe I could
be saved," finishes Sam. "But you know, I
just clouded my judgement. And you're right, we've gotta
go with what we know, with what we can see, what's right
there in front of our own two eyes.""Yeah
well, it's funny you say that," says Dean. "Why?"
asks Sam. "Gregory's spirit gave you some pretty
good information," says Dean. "The guy in
the car was bad news. I barely got there in time."
"What happened?" asks Sam. "He's dead,"
says Dean. "Did you?" asks Sam. "No.
But I'll tell you one thing – if – the way
he died, if I didn't see it with my own two eyes I never
would've believed it. I mean… I don't know what
to call it." "What?" asks Sam. "Dean,
what did you see?" Dean seems to be struggling
with what he's about to say. "Maybe…"
He finally looks up at Sam. "God's will."
